Do you know that the University of Helsinki is one of the oldest and leading universities of Europe?
The University of Helsinki is the highest educational institution in Finland. The University of Finland was founded in 1640 in Turku by Queen of Sweden Christina and is considered to be the first university in the territory of Finland. Firstly named as the Academy of Turku, it had a bad fate it was destroyed by fire and in 1828 the university was moved to Helsinki.  There it was renamed the Imperial Alexander University of Finland in honor of Tsar Alexander I who had made considerable investment in the University.

From that day on the University of Helsinki is considered to be the pride of Finnish people. The Helsinki University features four campuses where several faculties are located, the overall number of faculties is eleven. The four campuses are situated in four districts: in the City Centre, Kumpula, Meilahti and Viiki. The City Centre is located in the historic part of the town and has buildings with beautiful architecture belonging to the nineteenth century the period when the center was moved from Turku to Helsinki. In this area there are the Faculties of Theology, Law, Arts, Behavioral and Social Sciences are located.

The Faculty of Sciences is located in the Kumpula Campus, which is four miles from the center. In Meilahti , near the District Hospital Meilahti, the Faculty of Medicine is situated. In Viiki, you can find the faculties of Agriculture, Biology, Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy.

The University of Helsinki has strong international links and has cooperation agreements with over 80 universities of different continents. The University is bilingual, but in addition to Finnish and Swedish, studies in English are also realized.
