Oulu

The city of Oulu is one of the most developing cities of Finland, founded in 1605 Oulu now is the largest city in northern Finland, a center where wood is processed and exported.  The city lies at the mouth of the river Oulu 108 km long and has a population of more than 96,400 inhabitants.

Soon, Oulu has become one of the major centers of technological expertise in Finland and in Scandinavia. In 1982 the city of Oulu began a project funded by the state in cooperation with the University of Oulu called “The Oulu Centre of Expertise Program” in the result of which the first and largest technology park in the Nordic countries Teknopolis Oulu Ltd was created. Later in 1992 Medipolis Ltd was created which became the center for companies specializing in technology and biotechnology. Both institutions are working closely together and in cooperation with the University of Oulu.

The Oulu region is highly populated, which makes the city quite lively. In Oulu, you can hardly see any traffic jams and since the landscape is flat, the bicycle has become a common means of transport.

Oulu is a young, dynamic a city founded in the seventeenth century, and has a wealth of attractions and a wide choice of leisure activities. In this city you can enjoy the best salmon in the country.

It is also a university town, full of life and cultural activities to enjoy.

When it comes to music and theater Oulu preserves its old traditions. Finnish composer Erik Tulindberg wrote his string quartet in Oulu in the eighteenth century. The composer of the famous opera ‘Pohjalaisia’,  Leevi Madetoja was also of Oulu.
The level of education in the region of Oulu is statistically higher than in Finland in total.

From a cultural standpoint, Oulu is an ideal place to visit. Here you can visit the Cathedral and the Automobile Museum, famous theaters and galleries. Its Botanical Garden is also important place to visit.
